The University of Minnesota’s Ash River laboratory is home to the NOvA Far Detector, Fermilab’s flagship long base line neutrino experiment. The 14,000 ton liquid scintillator NOvA Far Detector has over 340,000 channels of electronics and sits 810 kilometers away from the powerful NUMI beam’s origin in Batavia, IL. The particles complete the 810 kilometer interstate trip in less than three milliseconds. The lab also hosts trial assembly work for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), a leading-edge, international experiment for neutrino science and proton decay studies. The DUNE Far Detector will be installed more than a kilometer underground at the Sanford Underground Research Laboratory in Lead, South Dakota.
Job Description This position has many responsibilities in the maintaining of the NOvA Far Detector at the Laboratory in Ash River, MN. Ash River is located ~40 miles south and east of International Falls, MN.
The position is responsible for a wide variety of specialized and complex maintenance, repair and replacement of parts on the Neutrino Detector, as well as providing assistance in the maintenance of the building HVAC and other associated equipment.
The candidate in this position will also work on R&D projects related to other neutrino detectors, such as the DUNE and ProtoDune 2 experiments. Training will be provided during the six-month probationary period with continued on-the-job training. The employee in this position will work a ten hour/four day work week, Monday through Thursday and on Fridays when needed. This position is part of an on-call rotating shift that takes care of the building and detector 24/7 as necessary. Qualified candidate may travel to CERN in France to work on the ProtoDune 2 Detector. This position at the NOvA Far Detector Laboratory is expected to last four to five years.
Job Duties Perform complex maintenance on the Neutrino Detector to include the replacement of Avalanche Photodiodes, Front End Boards & Data Collection Modules and all its supportive equipment to include the Dry Gas System, PLC’s & Cooling System. Troubleshoot building equipment systems by accessing a computerized building automation system (Siemens Insight). Assist in the daily inspection of complex fire mist system, roof top heating and cooling units, and low-pressure steam humidifiers. Installation and repair of water discharge systems including seasonal shut down. Candidate will participate with routine filter replacement, belt changes, and lubricating/greasing components. Will at times operate a pickup truck with power angle plow, 45-foot vertical man-lift, and forklift. Assist with DUNE and ProtoDune 2 Trial Assembly and R&D work which includes reading of prints, following engineer notes, operation of scissor lifts, material handling of large TPC components, working at heights and other mechanical tests as required.
This position will be responsible for the following duties.
35%- Maintains and repairs general building systems and hardware. Troubleshoots building equipment systems by accessing a dedicated building computer monitoring and automation system. Assist in the inspection of complex fire mist system, roof top heating and cooling units, and low-pressure steam humidifiers. Maintain Chiller and Dry Gas Pumps. Assist in the installation and repair of water discharge systems including seasonal shut down.
30%- Detector Maintenance Replace APD’s (Avalanche Photodiodes) and Front End Boards (FEBs) as well as other electronics associated with the maintenance and running of the Detector. This position is responsible for the testing of electronic circuits, instruments and equipment and any related troubleshooting issues. Assist with issues related to the server room such as replacement of servers and hard drives.
25%- Research and Development Assistance Work on R&D projects related to other experimental detectors, such as DUNE and ProtoDune 2. Confer with onsite staff as well as engineers and scientists, who may be visiting the NOvA site or working in other locations such as Cern, Fermilab and other off-site institutions to give feedback on tests, procedures and HA’s.

Required Qualifications Completion of a two-year technical school program related to electrical or mechanical systems plus a minimum of four years of work experience in this specialized field; or BS degree in electrical or mechanical engineering and one year of related work experience. Equivalent combinations of academic and work experience in a related field may be substituted for the degree. Must be able to follow verbal and detailed written work orders, plans and drawings. Ability to meet the physical requirements of the job. Position may require the ability to walk or stand for majority of the day; bend, climb, reach, kneel; carry, lift, push and pull 50 lbs. or more.
