The departments of Facilities Management & Campus Services (FMCS) work together to provide Service Excellence. The departments of FMCS work together to provide Service Excellence. The departments within FMCS offer the following services:
* Facilities Management Services - maintenance and repair, event support, custodial services, access control, grounds and landscaping, life safety systems, FMS storeroom
* Campus Services - includes University Stores, Tartan Ink (Copy centers, Printing & Mailing), Post Office, and Parking & Transportation Services
* Sustainability - extensive recycling and green practices
Carnegie Mellon University's department of FMS is searching for an HVAC Mechanic I to join our team. In this role you will perform work such as maintaining, repairing and operating HVAC equipment including reciprocating and centrifugal chillers, self-contained air conditioning units, refrigeration equipment in laboratories and dining service facilities, fan coil units, air handling units and fans.
Core responsibilities will include:
- Making adjustments and repairs to pneumatic, electric and electronic control components
- Monitoring and controlling equipment via computer interfaces, requisition job parts and supplies
- Inspecting and monitoring maintenance and repair functions and system equipment operations
- Performing other duties as required, including operation of on and off-road utility vehicles and trucks
- Reading and interpreting blue prints and schematic diagrams, and being familiar with building codes
Qualifications/Experience/Requirements:
- High School diploma or equivalent required
- Graduation from a trades certification or apprenticeship program as a journeyman HVAC or Air Conditioning mechanic. Universal/CFC management training
- Minimum of three (3) years experience as a journeyman level HVAC mechanic required, with experience in a large institutional (college, university, hospital, etc.) setting preferred. Additional experience in HVAC system and DDC installations preferred.
- EPA CFC Universal certification
- Valid Pennsylvania driver's license (or equivalent for out-of-state applicants)
- City of Pittsburgh Stationary Engineers License, certification as operating engineer preferred
- Membership of, or willingness to join Local #95, International Union of Operating Engineers
- Ability to work effectively with other crafts employees
- Ability to move and work in confined spaces, up and down ladders and to work from ladders, scaffolding and bucket truck platform.
- You will need to pass a physical exam for clearance to wear a respirator when working near hazardous environments.
- Required to travel to jobs over a 100+ acre campus with many hills and stairs, and will occasionally work outside during inclement conditions.
- Ability to lift 40 pounds from ground to overhead
- Willingness to work shifts, overtime and call-out work.

You should have strong communication skills, be able to work effectively with other craft employees, and professionally manage interactions with challenging customers. Additionally, you must be able to work independently and make appropriate decisions as to when additional help is needed to correct issues.
This position will require flexibility in working various shifts, overtime and call-out work. You will need to be able to work outside during inclement conditions and with sanitary waste in a safe and effective manner.
