Post-Doctoral Associate - Cyber-Physical Security - Civil and Environmental Engineering
Carnegie Mellon University
Location: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Internal Number: 2017118
Carnegie Mellon University's department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is searching for a Postdoctoral Research Associate specializing in Cyber-Physical-Security. Due to an increasing reliance on IoT solutions, unsuspecting cyber-physical systems such as HVAC systems in buildings, are becoming the target of cyberattacks all over the world. Many of the existing cybersecurity tools and approaches focus on IT systems (e.g., network traffic and denial of service) and the effectiveness of such tools to secure cyber-physical systems is not clear. Given that cyber-physical systems operate under physical laws specific to each domain, it would be possible to detect cyberattacks by incorporating domain models within data-driven AI approaches. For example, a purely data-driven solution could easily misidentify regular behavior of the system as a potential cyber-attack if the system operates in states that are not present during the calibration of the models. The challenge then is to distinguish cyberattacks from equipment faults and degradation of a piece of equipment.
We are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will work on development of novel cyber-physical attack detection algorithms through integration of domain models with data driven AI/ML approaches. We will specifically focus on HVAC systems in buildings, which are known to be especially vulnerable to cyber-attacks. These complex systems, made up of many interconnected components, also provide an opportunity to study the effects of a cyberattack as it propagates across different parts of a facility and makes tracing the origins of a cyberattack particularly difficult. You will work on both development of relevant approaches approach and testing them in a real-life setting on a testbed. The postdoctoral researcher may lead funded research projects, supervise graduate research assistants, and write research proposals and reports.
Core responsibilities include:
Assisting in ensuring project deliverables are achieved
Lab maintenance, including equipment maintenance and ordering of supplies may be required depending on area and specialty
Participating/assisting in manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals and/or presentations
Gathering and analyzing data, including periodical/literature search and utilizing specialized skills in related field to analyze the collected data
Conducting research experiments within the predetermined research scope and methodology of department and university
Other duties as assigned
You must demonstrate:
Strong analytical, problem solving and reasoning skills required
Strong organization and communication skills required
