Departmental Overview

California Institute for Energy and Environment (CIEE) is a dedicated group of experts working to define, plan, and manage public-interest energy research. CIEE puts leading researchers to work on energy challenges, yielding new ideas and technologies to meet California's pacesetting energy goals. In addition, CIEE has programs that support graduate and undergraduate students. CIEE also sponsors public outreach events including workshops and conferences.

The Building Efficiency for a Sustainable Tomorrow (BEST) Center works nationally to improve publicly funded 2- and 4-year college programs in engineering technology, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC/R), building automation systems, sustainability, and energy/facilities management and operations. Sponsored by an Advanced Technological Education National Center award from the National Science Foundation, BEST leads a collaborative of 70+ colleges nationwide to promote state-of-the-art building technician education for the operation of high performance buildings through the dissemination of the latest research, technological applications, educational methods, and industry partnerships.

Responsibilities

This is a one-year contract position

60%

• Administers a small to mid-sized program with primary responsibility for administrative and programmatic activities.
• NSF Building Efficiency for a Sustainable Tomorrow (BEST) Center program activities include:
• Oversees outreach and development of BEST College Network, a network of 70+ community and technical colleges from around the United States that offer a variety of building operations/ high performance programs including HVACR, Building Automation Systems, Sustainable Facilities Operations, and Building Controls.
• Organizes and coordinates Annual Conferences and Building Automation workshops, including participant outreach, recruitment and logistics.
• Organizes and conducts webinar and conference presentations.
• Coordinates National Visiting Committee annual meetings and presentations.
• Supports High Performance Building Operations Professional (HPBOP) Certification development.
• Coordinates with PI/Co-PIs regarding professional development planning and delivery.
• Coordinates with external evaluator in data collection and annual report development.
• Prepares project annual reports.
• Provides oversight for website updates and development.
• Manages social media platforms and content.
• Writes and coordinates publicity materials for biennial NSF ATE Impacts publication.
• Develops and implements strategies for STEM outreach to high school students, women, and underrepresented groups.
• Other activities as needed and to be developed in coordination with lead PI.

• Assists with writing proposals on behalf of BEST Center for NSF Advanced Technological Education (ATE) grants.
• Assists with identifying and writing proposals for BEST Center funding from related funding agencies.
• Solicits donations from strategic partners.
• Works with program leadership to identify and pursue funding opportunities and revenue streams.

• Participates in the program budgeting and accounting processes to support financial infrastructure of program.
• Negotiates budgets, along with work scopes for service contracts with vendors.
• Tracks vendor payments.
• Assists with monitoring annual operations budget for NSF BEST Center.

• Assesses program's effectiveness, and recommends changes to program's content, policies and procedures accordingly.

• Serves on committees representing the program, participating in short term and long term planning.
• Assists with strategic planning of annual goals and activities for NSF BEST Center.

Required Qualifications

• Advanced degree in an area related to management, business administration, or engineering in support of organizational and programmatic goals and/or equivalent experience/training.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Strong ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills.
• Strong ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers.
• Solid fundraising experience.
• Strong project management skills, including the capability of simultaneously managing multiple projects.
• Excellent ability to analyze, research, summarize and encapsulate data for a variety of audiences and higher levels of review.
• Excellent skills to work collaboratively, as well as work independently, and act persuasively in sensitive situations; skills in conflict management techniques. Ability to develop and maintain cooperative, effective working relationships with a diverse academic and administrative population.
• Experience working with high-level leadership to guide program impact.

Preferred Qualifications

• Academic background and experience in selected area of research preferred.
• Thorough knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices.
• Terminal degree in a related area (PhD, JD, MD, etc.) preferred.

• The salary range designated for this position: Up to $110,000; however, starting salary will be commensurate with experience.
• This is a one-year contract position. Contract positions may be extended based on operational demand. Contract positions are eligible to participate in the health and welfare programs offered by UC Berkeley.
