POSITION SUMMARY:
This position reports to the HVACR/Mechanical Supervisor. Performs Journeyman level functions related to heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR). Required to install, maintain, and repair electric, electronic, and pneumatic control systems, with their supporting machinery, heating/air-conditioning, refrigeration and special refrigeration equipment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs scheduled maintenance repairs of the plumbing, electrical, heating, cooling pneumatic and DDC systems; maintains and inspects equipment such as steam coils, cooling and heating coils, steam valves, traps, chilled water vales, pumps, check valves, condensers and evaporators located in building mechanical rooms. Performs repairs and notifies the responsible supervisor of repairs to other equipment associated with building operations.
Performs data entry and routine logging in the University’s computerized maintenance management system.
Reads and interprets blueprints, sketches and diagrams to install or modify refrigeration, environmental or control systems in compliance with applicable codes and manufacturer’s specifications.
Installs control apparatus including switches (electric, electronic and pneumatic), relays and thermostats.
Inspects and adjusts electrical, electronic, pneumatic, or mechanical temperature control devises associated with refrigeration or air-conditioning equipment.
Troubleshoots, repairs, maintains or overhauls temperature control devices, refrigeration or air-conditioning equipment.
Inspects, adjusts, services and lubricates air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment and all other related equipment on a scheduled basis.
Performs seasonal inspections; removes snow and ice from walks, steps, driveways, etc. and apply salt if necessary in assigned areas.
Drives all vehicles assigned to Motor Pool and Grounds Department.
Anti-freezes/winterizes equipment when required.
Diagnoses equipment problems and repairs effectively.
Repairs or overhauls all types of equipment, such as compressors, evaporators, condensers, pumps, cooling towers and heat exchangers, related to air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
Utilizes knowledge in the operation of CMMS (computerized maintenance management system).
Understands and is able to use Niagra, Honeywell, Siemens and Carrier control systems currently used by Duquesne University to operate the HVACR equipment.
Maintains and/or orders tools, materials, workspace, and parts.
Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Qualifications:
High school or vocational school diploma or equivalent.
Valid driver’s license.
Minimum of 5 years’ experience in HVACR for large building application in maintenance and operations and/or experience of a HVACR Journeyman.
Alternately, the successful candidate may possess any equivalent combination of experience and training, which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the essential job functions. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel.
Basic working knowledge of Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) used on used on various mechanical equipment including; blowers, pumps, chillers. Tasks include preventative maintenance, operation, diagnostics and programming. Training will be offered accordingly.
Ability to perform maintenance of refrigeration and HVAC equipment
Ability to perform troubleshooting and repair of refrigerant recovery, brazing, and control apparatus structures including switches, relays, thermostats and computers.
Knowledge of basic electrical systems and wiring principles.
Knowledge of applicable regulations, policies and procedures.
Detailed knowledge of HVAC systems incorporating digital control systems and linked to computer-based management systems.
Ability to use tools applicable to the trade, including testing and measuring devices.
Ability to understand and carry out instructions and communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively.
Willingness to adjust work schedule when necessary and as determined by supervisor, including work shift changes.
Ability to physically perform the daily work assignments inherent in this job description, including lifting and manipulating objects weighing up to 70 pounds regularly and the ability to perform work from ladders, scaffolding and elevated surfaces.
