Facilities Maintenance Operations (FMO) offers building &landscape maintenance, and custodial services to Harvard faculties and departments on a fee-for-service basis. All services are provided in strict accordance with customer-determined standards. As such, FMO operates as an in-house alternative to contractor services and therefore must manage itself under the same principles that guide any successful maintenance service business.
Installs, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs all types of plumbing systems and equipment typically found in institutional building types, including residential, laboratory and research, library, administrative, food service, athletic, classroom facilities, collection spaces, and campus water main distribution systems.
Installation and maintenance of plumbing systems may include: all types of waste piping, vent piping, irrigation, backflow, potable cold and hot water supply and distribution, safety eye wash and deluge showers, fuel gas piping, rainwater, surface, and subsurface water drainage, hot-water heating recycling units, and gray-water recovery and treatment systems. Installation and maintenance of plumbing equipment may include water meters, pumps, expansion tanks, backflow preventers, filters, water softeners, dilution basins, water heaters, heat exchangers, gauges, and control systems associated with HVAC or other building systems. Inspects, operates, and repairs Wastewater Treatment systems.
Performs all installation, maintenance, inspection and testing in accordance with applicable standards and requirements of the Massachusetts State Building Code and/or established compliance requirements of the Authority Having Jurisdiction. Interprets and updates mechanical plans, drawings and prints as necessary. Must observe and comply with all standard safety codes and practices and perform work in accordance with recognized trade and University standards. Performs other core skills of the trades and related duties as required.
May be assigned to work independently or as part of a multi-trade team under the guidance and direction of the Area Supervisor and/or Working Foreperson. Assists and advises customers on progress / status of work and provides responsive and effective customer support in all phases of building maintenance operations.

Minimum five years experience installing and maintaining commercial or institutional scale plumbing systems. A valid Massachusetts Wastewater Treatment Operator license preferred. Must possess demonstrated proficiency in the use of industry-recognized diagnostic testing and troubleshooting equipment. Must be able to perform mathematical calculations required to accurately size and install system components and devices. Must be able to read and interpret detailed plans, drawings, specifications, operating manuals, and other written materials associated with this trade. Must be able to effectively communicate and interact with peers and customers.
Technology Skills Required: Basic keyboard proficiency and understanding of Windows® based software.
Special Requirements (and ongoing conditions of employment):
- Massachusetts Journeyman or Master Plumber license for minimum period of five years.
- Valid State driver's license and driving history satisfactory to meet Campus Services standards.
- May be required to obtain a Massachusetts Wastewater Treatment Operator license.
- Required to supply a complete set of hand tools.
- Must be willing to work in research laboratory environments and around hazardous materials.
- Must be willing to accept a reasonable amount of overtime in support of group business needs.
- Required to wear a clean, neat uniform and maintain a professional image at all times.
- Required to wear safety equipment and clothing when appropriate and/or required.
