Assistant Golf Course Superintendent
Nature of Work
This is difficult technical and skilled work assisting with the planning, organizing and implementation of the maintenance program for the city owned golf course. Activities associated with the job include supervising and participating in the preparation and maintenance of the golf course and related facilities, coordinating fertility, weed, insect and disease control programs, and supervising and participating in the maintenance of golf course grounds, fairways, tees, greens and irrigation and watering systems. Additional activities include supervising and assisting with the aeration, top-dressing, and watering of greens, preparing and application of chemicals, fertilizers and soil enrichment materials and instructing staff in proper grounds maintenance procedures. Job responsibilities require considerable knowledge of the principles, practices methods and materials utilized in golf course maintenance, considerable knowledge of landscape design, plant material selection and related practices, considerable experience working for a golf course and/or landscaping company, experience performing light maintenance
activities, ability to effectively supervise and direct the activities of staff, good
organizational, interpersonal and decision making skills and sufficient strength and
agility to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job in a variety of weather conditions. Job performance is evaluated by the Golf Course Superintendent through review of the knowledge and expertise in grounds maintenance and landscaping activities, level of support and assistance provided for golf course operations and activities, ability to effectively supervise and direct the activities of staff and ensure that they follow daily instructions and established policies and procedures, knowledge and skill in operating mowing and grounds maintenance equipment and performing light maintenance activities and organizational, interpersonal and decision making skills.
Illustrative Examples of Work
-Supervises and participates in the maintenance of golf course grounds, fairways, tees, greens and irrigation and watering systems.
-Assists with coordinates budgetary activities and assists with making decisions
pertaining to the design, plant material selection, purchasing, installation and
maintenance of landscaped areas.
-Supervises and assists with aeration, top-dressing and watering of greens utilizing
specialized equipment.
-Supervises and assists with the repair and maintenance of sprinkler and watering
systems.
-Assists with coordinates fertility, weed, insect and disease control programs.
-Oversees the preparation and application of specialized chemicals, fertilizers and soil enrichment materials.
-Assists with instructing and training subordinates in proper grounds maintenance and related activities.
-Oversees and assists with diagnosing the condition of greens, anticipating weather and climatic conditions and initiating appropriate maintenance activities.
-Operates golf course equipment in connection with the above tasks.
-Oversees the maintenance of daily logs of pesticide and other chemical applications.
-Supervises and assists with grounds improvement, laying sod, repairing cart paths and other facilities.
-Assists with the preparation and maintenance all departmental files and records.
-Oversees the performance of routine preventive maintenance practices and minor repairs on lawn equipment and machinery.
-Supervises the maintenance and cleaning of shelters and grounds.
-Performs light carpentry, plumbing and electrical repairs on golf course structures and buildings.
-Interacts with the public in a courteous and professional manner and remains cognizant of their location when performing grounds maintenance activities.
-Performs related duties as required.
Necessary Requirements of Work
Graduation from an accredited two or four year college or university with a Degree in turf management, agronomy or related field, or Turfgrass Management Certification or related certification; considerable knowledge and experience in performing lawn maintenance and/or landscaping duties; considerable knowledge of landscape design, plant material selection and related practices; considerable experience performing light maintenance activities including painting, carpentry and building maintenance; ability to effectively supervise and direct the activities of assigned staff and ensure they consistently follow directions and established policies and procedures; sufficient strength and agility to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job in a variety of weather conditions; good organizational, interpersonal and decision making skills; or any equivalent combination of education or experience to provide the following knowledge,
abilities and skills:
-Considerable knowledge of the safe operation of machinery and equipment utilized for lawn maintenance and landscaping activities including commercial mowers, weed eaters, tractors, edging equipment, etc.
-Considerable knowledge of the proper use and application of pesticides, insecticides, fungicides, fertilizers and grass seed.
-Considerable knowledge of the safety precautions and recommended first aide practices associated with frequently utilized chemicals including Safety Data Sheet information.
-Considerable knowledge of the tools and practices associated with light maintenance activities including carpentry, plumbing and minor electrical repairs.
-Considerable knowledge of the tools, equipment and practices associated with the
painting of exterior and interior surfaces.
-Considerable knowledge of budgetary practices and procedures including the monitoring of receipts and expenditures.
-Considerable knowledge of effective supervisory techniques and practices including the selection, evaluation, motivation and discipline and/or discharge of staff.
-Ability to effectively supervise and direct the activities of assigned personnel.
-Ability to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job in a variety of weather conditions.
-Ability to consistently enforce daily instructions and established policies and procedures.
-Ability to interact effectively with local officials, co-workers, golfers and the public.
-Ability to safely operate all machinery and equipment utilized on the job and follow existing safety precautions.
-Skill in the use of power equipment and machinery utilized on the job including mowers, weed eaters, tractors, edging equipment, fertilizer, pesticide and insecticide sprayers, etc.
-Skill in the use of hand and power tools used to perform light maintenance activities including painting, carpentry, plumbing and minor electrical repairs.
Physical Requirements
This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects, work requires stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, grasping and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards and atmospheric conditions and oils.
Necessary Special Requirements
-Possession of a valid Tennessee Drivers license and the ability to be insured at standard vehicle liability rates.
-Possession of a valid Category 3 Tennessee pesticide applicator license or must obtain a license within 6 months.
