Facilities Engineering is responsible for university stewardship, which includes, but is not limited to the stewardship of engineered systems on campus, maintenance of Design and Construction Standards, Construction Document archiving, and project design reviews for QA and standards compliance.
Facilities Engineering also provides project management services that cover engineered systems infrastructure, system intensive building renovations, small building renovations up to $1M (typically a result of an initial assessment), local approvals efforts, energy conservation projects, and projects relative to research collaboration.
Facilities Engineering manages maintenance programs for campus-wide systems such as bridges, generators, elevators, roofs, structures, pavement, and more.
Position Summary:
This position will reward a design professional who wants to join an organization that takes on big challenges with bold projects. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to be heavily involved in ongoing changes to the Cornell campus, including the selection of building systems that support the University's ongoing shift towards climate neutrality. This includes not only involvement in the selection and specification of HVAC, plumbing and fire protection systems, but also the opportunity to be involved at all phases from preliminary design through the final construction of new facilities and major renovations.
This position serves as mechanical engineering subject matter expert within Facilities Engineering.
Responsibilities include the following:
Work as a team member with Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental and Energy Engineering, and Architectural/ Structural/Civil Engineering sections to deliver effective and efficient engineering services.
Provide support on designs for a range of engineered mechanical systems, including HVAC and piping distribution, lab renovations, fire protection layout, system assessments, estimating, and life cycle cost analysis.
Maintain intimate knowledge of codes to provide interpretations and recommendations related to University projects.
Knowledge and experience using software bundles like Carrier HAP, eQuest, and EnergyPlus perform HVAC load calculations, building energy analyses, HVAC duct and pipe sizing, and life cycle cost analyses.
Prepare and review technical reports and present results to clients. Expect to provide standard construction administration and inspection services for designed systems.
Collaborate with campus partners (Energy and Sustainability, Facilities Maintenance, Project Management, University Architect, college units) to plan and implement improvements to campus infrastructure, buildings, and energy assets.
Maintain skillset at a high level of technical expertise within Facilities Engineering. Provide technical and financial analysis, including design reviews, for projects managed throughout the University.
Collaborate with other university stakeholders in developing and updating University design and construction standards relating to mechanical engineering, energy and sustainability engineering and campus infrastructure, and review the work of external consultants to ensure the appropriate incorporation of these standards.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program (BSME preferred) plus three years minimum applicable design experience, or equivalent education/experience of twelve credit years as recognized by New York State Education Law Article 145, Section 7206 as demonstrated by application to the NYS Education Department, Office of the Professions.
Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering exam.
Working knowledge of the appropriate codes and standards in discipline and demonstrated skill in design of facility mechanical and/or energy systems.
Understanding of energy modeling programs and protocols, HVAC principles.
Excellent oral and written communication skills as well as ability to develop and maintain effective customer relationships within a team approach.
Ability to work on multiple projects and designs with varying scope and multiple stages of completion.
Must have and maintain a valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced engineering degree, five to seven years' experience and/or a New York State Professional Engineer's license, experience with heating and cooling load calculation software campus facilities experience, and experience with district energy generation and distribution are all preferred qualifications.
Proficiency with a variety of business and technical computer software (such as Word, Excel, CADD, Revit) also desired.
Leadership experience on design and capital construction projects (up to ~$5M) and ability to drive projects to successful conclusion.
