We are seeking a pragmatic, results-oriented, individual with a passion for sustainability and energy conservation to support planning, design and construction activities related to new buildings, renovations of existing buildings, upgrades to infrastructure, and energy plant efficiency upgrades to help achieve the University’s Carbon Neutrality, Climate Action Plan and Resilience Plans including progress reporting. Supports project management teams in the analysis and selection of energy efficient Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) systems including Life Cycle Analyses. Assists project teams with LEED certification process, compliance with the State’s High-Performance Building Standard as well as oversight on building commissioning processes. The successful candidate will be able to work at multiple scales, and with multiple audiences, adjusting their approach to the audience. Coordinates with the University Sustainability Office, Facilities Management Operations, and other facility-oriented organizations.
The ideal candidate will have:
- BS in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Architecture, or equivalent.
- 5-7 years of experience leading design, life cycle analysis and implementation of energy systems for higher education and healthcare facilities
- Strong verbal, written, computer, technical communication and presentation skills.
- Demonstrated human relation skills

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supports project managers throughout the life of design and construction projects to establish energy performance goals, evaluate life cycle costs of MEP system options, guide and monitor the LEED certification process, and ensure resolution of energy system issues.
- Coordinates with Project Managers and Facilities Managers to assure that operational needs are addressed during the MEP design and construction process.
- Responsible for keeping abreast of current and future market trends in energy design for buildings and utility plants.
- Responsible for representing energy strategy, goals and progress on design and construction projects to the University through team training and advocacy.
- Leads and manages building and utility/ energy efficiency improvement initiatives.
- May be assigned to manage sustainability focused projects as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, a related field, or equivalency; AND 5-7 years of related experience; Familiarity with State and national building codes and experience working on capital development project, and; Demonstrated human relation and effective written and verbal communication skills are required.
Current licensure with the State of Utah as an Architect or Engineer is preferred.
PREFERENCES:
- Professional Engineering or Architectural registration
- Experience in delivery of LEED, All-Electric buildings, Building Commissioning, and project management
- Experience with energy efficiency disciplines including renewable energy systems, active energy management, lighting retrofit, building controls and automation, groundsource thermal design, heat recovery systems, VRF systems and other emerging technologies. Experience with other sustainability project implementation such as water projects or others.
