Under general direction of the Animal Resources Manager - Beef Facilities, this position oversees the Animal Science Feed mill. This position provides facility and personnel management, instruction support, and participates in research and extension activities of the UCD Department of Animal Science.
Under direction of the Animal Resources Manager, responsible for managing the UCD Department of Animal Science feed processing facility. Feed mill manager is responsible an annual production of complexly manufactured feedstuffs exceeding 2 million pounds (1,200 tons) for over 2,000 head of livestock on a daily basis. Over 25 Animal Science and Veterinary School faculty rely upon the nutrient processing facility to formulate feed for research and teaching needs. Responsible for the planning and management of the facility, including scheduling base rations and research ration production; ordering and delivering foodstuffs; maintaining and repairing the facility; inventorying and record keeping; scheduling campus and external service people; scheduling student labor and laboratory use of the facility; and serving as the facility safety officer. Supports approximately five internships per year, assist in delivery of education module on nutrient processing facility operation, and supports outreach activities related to the facility. This position supervises 5 - 10 undergraduate and graduate employees and interns per year. Assists with daily feedlot operations as needed.

Must be able to bend, squat, reach above shoulder level, stand and walk on hard surfaces up to 7 hours per day as needed.
Lift and or move 120-pound hay bales and 50 to 100-pound feed sacks.
Wear apropriate personal protective equipment
Work occasional overtime including evenings, weekends, and holidays as required on an infrequent basis, to meet operational, project and deadline needs.
Limited vacation during busy periods.
Ability to work in a hot, dusty, noisy environment.
Must possess valid CA driver's license, participate in DMV Pull Notice Program and the UCD Occupational Health Program.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :
Demonstrate knowledge and ability to be fully operational in the manufacturing of animal feeds, including but not limited to: chopping, mixing, steam flaking, rolling, pelleting, and cubing.
Demonstrate knowledge of feed formulation for swine, dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep, goats, and horses.
Demonstrate accurate record keeping capabilities necessary to maintain an operational feed mill producing a diverse variety and quantity of feed stuffs; this is including but not limited to: Commodity inventory, production records, equipment service records, employee training records, etc.
Demonstrate organizational skills to initiate preventative maintenance plan for a large, highly mechanized manufacturing facility, schedule jobs and workers for specified services, and feed manufacturing schedule, all in coordination with various facility, teaching, and research needs.
Demonstrate knowledge and ability to be fully operational in various techniques such as gas welding, arc welding, plumbing for water, steam, and air, basic electrical, operation of power tools, etc.
Demonstrate basic knowledge of crop and forage management, quality assessment, and nutrient profiles.
Additional Preferred License/Certification:
Demonstrate basic knowledge and/or experience with livestock management and handling skills.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :
Ability to communicate and interact with individuals and groups within the Department, College, and Campus as well as establish a rapport with the animal feed processing industry withing the state of California.
Ability to instruct graduate and undergraduate students on the basics of nutrient processing and mill management.
Demonstrate understanding of Federal, State, Campus, and Department safety rules and regulations including controlled feed ingredient storage and use.
