Summary of Position:
Provide leadership, oversight, training, performance management, and professional development for an HVAC&R shop of four to six tradesmen and a plumbing shop of five plumbers. Supervise and coordinate work activities of the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration mechanics engaged in installing, operating and maintaining heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems. Supervise and coordinate all work activities of pipes, fittings, fixtures, and equipment related to heating, water supply, and waste disposal systems. Serve as project manager for contracted and in-house maintenance, construction and renovation projects.
Associate's degree in HVAC&R or related trade, or equivalent work experience.
Required Work Experience:
Six years of experience in heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration operations.
Required Licenses and Certifications:

Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, a State of Michigan Mechanical Contractor License, OSHA Safety Certification, APPA or other facilities management certification, documented leadership development training. At least three years of supervisory experience directly related to the HVAC&R trades.
Provide leadership, oversight, training, performance management, and professional development for the HVAC&R and Plumbing shops.
Supervise, schedule and provide training to journeyman and apprentice HVAC&R mechanics, plumbers, and student workers.
Assign jobs, maintain quality control, monitor work progress and make sure that safety procedures are followed.
Analyze jobs and work order requests to plan material, labor and time requirements and provide cost estimates when required.
Coordinate with other department supervisors for the expeditious completion of work.
Schedule employee vacations, approve sick time requests, maintain overtime list, time cards and labor distribution cards.
Provide for response to emergency situations and provide for HVAC&R and Plumbing service response on call at all times (365 days a year, 24 hours a day).
Maintain records and prepare reports as necessary.
Provide assistance for engineering and design work related to HVACR maintenance and Plumbing on construction projects.
Prepare tasks and generate work orders related to HVACR preventative maintenance including editing/updating of systems. Schedule task priorities and frequency of preventive maintenance tasks.
Evaluate and ensure conformance with all applicable HVACR/mechanical codes including CFC management.
Perform facility audits to determine current and future deferred maintenance and minor capital improvement requirements.
Coordinate with Plant Stores to arrange for the order and delivery of material as required.
Ensure the safety and security of HVACR storage areas and equipment.
Attend meetings, write memos and letters as required.
Attend seminars to keep up with industry trends and technology, and technical training to enhance knowledge and abilities.
Administer and ensure compliance with work rules and the Union contract.
Demonstrates an understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion, especially in working relationships with students, faculty, staff and community members.
Any other duties assigned within the position classification area.
Skills and Abilities:
Must be able to lead, coordinate, and create a positive work environment for all assigned employees.
Must possess basic computer skills necessary to accomplish tasks associated with time management system; the facilities management computerized maintenance management system; and the CFC tracking system.
Must possess demonstrated skills in reading and interpreting blue prints, charts and job specifications.
Must have working knowledge of mechanical building codes and other related building codes such as electrical and plumbing.
Must possess knowledge of and ability to demonstrate use of tools associated with heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration trade.
Must be able to motivate, organize, schedule and supervise employees in workforce.
Must be able to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships; communicate effectively (both orally and in writing); perform basic mathematical functions with accuracy; evaluate the performance, personality, adaptability and skill levels of job applicants and employees; and be capable of understanding and administering union contracts and be conversant in labor relations.
Must possess a positive attitude, be adaptable to changing priorities and changes in technology within the industry necessary to lead and provide guidance for the department employees.
