The Campus Mechanical Engineer position is a salaried, professional position that will be filled by a licensed engineer (NYS preferred or NYS eligible) with mechanical engineering experience in HVAC design and facilities systems. They will work with in-house architects and project managers, energy/sustainability staff, facilities operations staff, and outside consultant teams on the planning, design, and construction of campus projects.
Primary duties:
Design Support
Develop designs and construction documents for bidding for in-house HVAC and controls systems projects, perform construction administration and project closeout tasks
Review and comment on design submissions from outside consultants, keeping campus standards, budgets and state mandated energy goals in mind
Assessment & Planning
Partner with Facilities Operations and Sustainability Office staff to assess existing building systems for condition and operational efficiencies, energy savings, controls strategies, and tactics for achieving mandated carbon neutrality goals.
Other aspects of the job include:
Knowledge of, and designing to, NYS Building Codes
Meeting with clients / customers and design teams to identify and hone scopes of work
Preparing cost estimates for in-house project requests
Understanding and application of holistic building energy conservation strategies including building envelope concepts, controls sequencing and occupant comfort
Participate in energy reduction/decarbonization initiatives such as: SUNY New Paltz Carbon Neutrality Task Force, Clean Energy Master Plan, District Heat Pump Feasibility Study and State University Construction Fund Directive 1B-2: Net Zero Carbon New Construction and Deep Energy Retrofit projects
Evaluate and integrate incentives for energy conservation measures and consulting services in support of design and construction projects, and operational improvements
Analyze building-level electrical and thermal energy usage data
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field is required
Professional engineering license, PE required / PE in mechanical engineering preferred
Minimum two (2) years of experience as a licensed Professional Engineer required (in mechanical/HVAC engineering design preferred); further experience prior to licensure in the field is a plus
Experience on college, hospital or industrial campus, or other large facilities campus with central utility plant, is preferred
Experience with electrification of HVAC systems and/or central plants is preferred
AutoCAD 2018, or later version software proficiency required / Revit proficiency preferred
Technical knowledge of design and construction industry standards required
Ability to comprehend construction drawings and specifications and prepare pertinent review comments required
MS Word and Excel proficiency preferred
Working knowledge of NYS Building Code preferred
