The Industrial Hygiene Specialist is part of the Occupational Health and Safety Division of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) and reports to the Associate Director for Industrial Hygiene. This position supports the industrial hygiene program through monitoring, hazard assessments, project support, training, and emergency response. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to, respirator usage evaluation, training and fit testing; workplace ergonomic evaluations; asbestos inspections; indoor air quality studies, noise surveys, exposure monitoring for physical, chemical, and biological hazards, IH equipment management, and safety equipment assessment and inspections
This position is primarily based on the Charles River Campus but has responsibilities on the BU Medical campus which also includes Boston Medical Center.

Job Responsibilities
Assess and test safety equipment, including emergency eyewash/safety showers, patient isolation rooms, laboratory chemical fume hoods, and portable industrial hygiene equipment.
Assisting with industrial hygiene assessments including indoor air quality and odor investigations, chemical exposure monitoring, and other occupational hazards.
Conduct asbestos surveys in accordance with the institutional Asbestos Management Plan (AMP). Make determinations on sampling strategy, collect samples for laboratory analysis, interpret results, and develop action plans. Work with project managers to manage asbestos during facilities maintenance, renovations, and construction activities. Provide asbestos training to staff as required under AMP.
Train faculty, staff, and students in respiratory protection. Perform respirator fit testing in accordance with the institutional Respirator Protection Program (RRP).
Perform other industrial hygiene activities, as requested. Works with other divisions of EHS to help maintain and foster culture of safety.
Serves as a member of the EHS on-call program (Emergency Response).
Perform all other duties as assigned.
Required Skills:
A./B.S. in a related field.
1-3 years of industrial hygiene experience, preferably in an academic research or health care setting.
Valid driver's license.
Basic computer skills (business systems, Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Proficient communicator and trainer.
Successful completion of a pre-placement physical.
Preferred Experience:
OSHA HAZWOPER 40-hour Certification.
Familiarity with mechanical and plumbing systems.
EHS experience in the academic or healthcare industry
EHS professional certification
Asbestos sampling
Water remediation
Indoor air quality assessments
Experience in compliance inspections with external environmental regulators.
