The Plumber position works under general supervision spending most of the time working as a skilled plumber. Oversees and provides lead work direction to a small group of journey-level and semi-skilled assistants from other parts of trades shop that would be involved in completing plumbing work when/where needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Plumbing: (85%)
Primary Responsibilities:
Piping for plumbing, water, waste, floor drains, drain grates, supply, pipe, grease traps, sewage, and vent lines.
All cold, hot and circulating water lines, piping for pumps, ejectors, pressure tanks, display fountains, drinking fountains, aquariums, plumbing fixtures and appliances, and the handling and setting of the above-mentioned equipment.
All water services from mains to buildings, including water meters and water meter foundations.
All water mains from whatever source, including branches and fire hydrants, etc.
All down spouts and drainage areas, soil pipe, catch basins, manholes, drains, gravel basins, storm water sewers, septic tanks, cisterns, water storage tanks, etc.
The setting, erecting, and piping of instruments, measuring devices, thermostatic controls, gauge boards and other controls used in connection with power, heating, refrigerating, air conditioning, manufacturing, mining and industrial work.
The setting and erecting of all boiler feeders, water heaters, filters, water softeners, purifiers, condensate equipment, pumps, condensers, coolers, and all piping for same in distributing boosting stations, refrigeration, heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems.
All piping for power or heating purpose, either by water, air, steam, gas, or any other method.
All piping, setting, and hanging of all units and fixtures for air conditioning, cooling, heating, roof cooling, refrigeration, ice making, humidifying, dehydrating by any method, and the charging and testing service of all work after completion.
All pneumatic tube work and all piping for carrying systems by vacuums, compressed air, steam, water or any other method.
All acetylene brazing, lead burning, soldered and wiped joints, caulked joints, expanded joints, rolled joints or any other mode or method of making joints in connection with the pipe fitting industry.
Laying out, cutting, bending, and fabricating of all pipe work of every description, by whatever mode or method.
Install, repair, and maintain systems and equipment such as:
Water Systems (Raw, Soft, DHW, RO/DI, MTW)
Drain Systems (Sewage and Laboratory Waste)
Carbon Dioxide Systems
Air Compressor Systems
Vacuum Systems
Natural Gas Systems
Liquid Nitrogen Systems

Autoclaves
Observe functioning of installed facility equipment to detect hazards, needed adjustments, relocation, or replacements.
Prepare sketches showing location of piping and equipment.
Inspect all equipment on a regularly scheduled basis; meets all requirements of the established preventive maintenance program.
Prepare routine reports and make estimates of time and materials needed for task completion.
Ensure adequate inventory of necessary supplies and parts.
Utilize procurement system to order supplies and parts.
Maintain the files necessary to support all maintenance activities.
Support maintenance of construction plans, prints, specifications and Operations and Maintenance Manuals.
Draw diagrams and sketches and plan layout of plumbing work to be performed.
Check own work and possibly work of others.
Prioritize weekly schedule.
Train employees on technical skills and may occasionally assist them with problem solving and technical procedures.
Maintain records and communications using the work management system, MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
LEADERSHIP: (10%)
Supervise, instruct, and lead a small group of trade workers as directed on projects.
Instruct on safety rules and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
Provide work direction to lower-level technicians, and act as supervisor in the absence of the Supervisor of Facility Services as directed.
OTHER DUTIES: (5%)
Perform a variety of routine manual duties as required, such as moving supplies, furniture, equipment, removing trash, scrap material, sweeping and mopping, etc.
EXPERIENCE
Required:
3-5 years of experience as a Plumber
EDUCATION
Required:
High school graduate/GED
1 year of trade/vocational education or combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard plumber’s apprenticeship program.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Required:
Ability to read and interpret construction plans, prints, specifications and Operations and Maintenance Manuals.
Ability to use broad guidelines and independent judgement in resolving problems and making recommendations for improvement in processes and assigned tasks.
Ability to use ladders to gain access to work areas and to work from heights.
Ability to assemble, install, maintain, and repair plumbing fixtures.
Ability to make rough sketches, estimate the cost, time, and materials of plumbing l work.
Ability to work well independently or in a group, always exercising Institute and professionally established safety precautions.
Demonstrated working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations.
Strong interpersonal skills that include tact, good judgment, diplomacy, and flexibility to relate to diverse scientific research staff, faculty, executive management, administrative staff, and external contacts.
Ability to analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations.
Ability to work as team member and team resource.
Ability to apply knowledge, skills and Institute policies and procedures with a high level of independence to resolve issues for customers.
Ability to lead and coach others.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Must be willing to use ladders to provide access to work areas and works from heights.
Must be able to work overtime as needed.
Willing to sign an employee confidentiality agreement.
Satisfactory completion of the post-offer physical required.
Must be willing to maintain First Aid/CPR/AED training/certification.
