With direction from the Zone Manager and Working Supervisor, the Mechanic works with a team of 10-12 multi-craft mechanics to provide routine and emergency plumbing and multi-craft maintenance for campus buildings. Additionally, the mechanic works closely with internal customers including students, faculty and staff to resolve maintenance issues and work orders. Typical craft-specific work includes but is not limited to the maintenance, installation, repair and inspection of plumbing and piping systems, equipment and fixtures.
Multi-craft maintenance activities may include working with various plumbing systems, basic electrical work, paint and carpentry.
This position is a member of the collective bargaining unit, Local #148 International Union of Operating Engineers, AFL-CIO.
The wage for this position is $35.28 .
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Maintaining and repairing a variety of plumbing systems building infrastructure systems and equipment such as hot/chilled water systems, sewage lift stations, grease/chemical traps, fire pumps, loop systems, softeners, water heaters, and drainage systems, etc. Troubleshoots leak supplies and drain lines, cabling as needed up to 50 feet and smaller drain lines.
Responding to work orders in and other requests in a timely, efficient, competent, knowledgeable and friendly manner.
Performing preventative maintenance based on the building needs and individual skillset (e.g. HVAC filter change, general equipment room inspections, etc.).
Pro-actively identifying, communicating and addressing needs without direction when appropriate.
Maintaining data per departmental policy.
Utilizing materials, supplies, tools and other University property in a safe, productive manner.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Technical school training in maintenance related courses strongly preferred.
Familiarity with hydro therapy machines is a plus.
Ability to communicate and work effectively/appropriately with members of the campus community and other employees within Facilities.
Understands the importance of satisfying the needs of the campus community (customer oriented) and providing value to the University.
Ability to read and understand blue prints.
Capable of doing extensive walking, climbing stairs/ladders, lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs. and other similar physical activity.
Must be willing to provide oneâ™s own hand tools.
Must have a State of Missouri Class E or above driverâ™s license or the equivalent from another state prior to employment.
Excellent attendance record.
High school diploma or equivalent high school certification; 24 hour availability for emergencies and willingness to work overtime.
Must have a State of Missouri Class E or above driverâ™s license or the equivalent from another state prior to employment or within first 30 days of employment.
Candidate must have completed a recognized craft apprenticeship program, a technical school training program (i.e. Ranken Technical College) or equivalent training program.
Minimum of five years' professional experience.
Proficient at maintaining and repairing a variety of plumbing systems. This includes, but not limited to, fixtures such as toilets, faucets, showers, as well as building infrastructure systems such hot/chilled water systems, sewage lift stations, grease/chemical traps, fire pumps, loop systems, softeners, water heaters, and drainage systems, etc.
Skilled in working with a variety of pipe types including copper, iron, PVC, etc.
Capability to clear a range of stoppages from sink traps and toilets to cabling out main drains.
Effective while working alone and within a team environment.
