ASSISTANT MANAGER, Facilities-Repair and Maintenance (R&M), to be responsible for monitoring, maintaining, repairing, and ensuring the efficient and reliable operation of MIT's complex building portfolio. Will direct the functions of nine trade teams made up of eighty employees within R&M that carry out mechanical, plumbing, piping, HVACR, HVAC controls, and general repair services; direct teams in the repair and maintenance of 150 buildings across a 168-acre campus; and provide direction in the areas of budget, labor relations, staff development and morale, department productivity and effectiveness, accountability, project support, and customer service.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: high school diploma or its equivalent; five years' direct relevant work and supervisory experience; experience managing across a broad range of facilities management challenges in a large repair and maintenance environment; experience overseeing a significant budget in a multi-building complex, e.g., institutional, agency, or corporate environment; working knowledge of MA building and licensing code; ability to direct and converse technically with engineers and architects regarding campus utility systems for electricity, steam, water, sewer and the maintenance, operation, and the design and construction of campus buildings; strong computer skills, including thorough knowledge of MS Office; demonstrated leadership skills in the areas of short and long-term planning, project management, and customer satisfaction; experience managing in a union environment; excellent customer service, verbal and written communication, and presentation skills; ability to negotiate, gain consensus, and lead in a complex, collaborative environment; and comprehensive knowledge of maintenance equipment operation and design and leading-edge methods of providing efficient, effective maintenance services. WORKING CONDITIONS: ascending/descending stairs; traversing the campus; moving about the job site and machinery to access equipment; remaining stationary for extended periods of time; walking/standing for extended periods of time; working from ladders, scaffolds, and other above-ground locations such as roofs; wearing personal protective equipment as required by the specific assignment; exposure to dust, odors, and fumes, high levels of noise, and temperature extremes; and working near steam and moving machinery, in tight areas and confined spaces such as manholes and crawl spaces, and with and around chemicals and solvents. Some work is performed in research labs and animal facilities and outdoors in inclement weather.

Repair and Maintenance is a 24/7 operation. Must be available to respond to emergencies on any shift or holiday as necessary and provide standby supervisory coverage on a rotating basis on weekends and holidays.
