Carnegie Mellon University's department of Facilities Management is searching for a Laborer I to join our FMCS team. In this role you will perform minor routine and preventive maintenance tasks in support of all crafts. Perform work of a semi-skilled nature in a variety of maintenance and construction trades. Provide direct assistance to craftsperson's in a variety of crafts including plumbers, pipefitters, A/C mechanics, carpenters, electricians, painters and masons. Perform other duties as assigned including those of laborer. Operates on and off-road utility vehicles and light trucks in support of assigned work. Requisition job parts and supplies.
Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to identify and effectively use hand tools including hammers, screwdrivers and wrenches. Basic knowledge of electricity and mechanical principles.
- Ability to move and work in confined spaces, up and down ladders and to work from ladders and scaffolding. Travel to jobs over a 100+ acre campus with many hills and stairs. Ability to lift 40 pounds from ground to overhead.
- Operate on and off road vehicles in support of assigned work.
- Ability to occasionally work outside during inclement conditions.
- Must be able to work effectively both as an assistant to others and able to perform clearly defined tasks with minimal supervision. Must be able to deal with difficult people effectively.
- Ability to work first, second, or third shift.
Qualifications/Experience/Requirements:
- High School diploma or equivalent evidence of ability to read and comprehend basic technical instructions and legibly and clearly record findings and tasks performed.
- Valid Pennsylvania driver's license (or equivalent for out-of-state applicants).
- Two years of full-time experience, demonstrating experience in working as part of a team with at least occasional requirements for independent decision-making required.
- Minimum one year, two + years preferred, sub journeyman-level experience in electrical, plumbing, HVAC and/or structural trades. Some documented on the job experience in the use of hand tools.
- Formal training in electrical/mechanical/structural systems preferred.
- Must be a member of, or agree to join Local #95 International Union of Operating Engineers bargaining unit.
- Willingness to work shifts, overtime and call-out work.
- Other craft licenses or certifications (e.g. electrician, plumber, operating engineer) preferred.
- Maintenance experience in an institutional (college, university, hospital, etc.) setting preferred.
- Pre and post-employment drug and alcohol testing will be required. A driver's license and criminal records check will be conducted prior to an offer of employment being made.
- Must pass a pre-employment physical exam for clearance to wear a respirator when working near hazards and to meet minimum job requirements.
- You must be a member of, or agree to join Local #95 International Union of Operating Engineers bargaining unit.

You should have strong communication skills, be able to work effectively with other craft employees, and professionally manage interactions with challenging customers. Additionally, you must be able to work independently and make appropriate decisions as to when additional help is needed to correct issues.
This position will require flexibility in working various shifts, overtime and call-out work. You will need to be able to work outside during inclement conditions and with sanitary waste in a safe and effective manner.
