Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Building Technology Urban Systems Division has an opening for a Whole Building Systems Program Manager to join the team.
The Whole Building Systems (WBS) department promotes the design, construction, and operation of energy-efficient low-carbon commercial and residential buildings through applied research and development, deployment strategies, and integrated, whole-building approaches.
In this exciting role, you will support applied research, demonstration and deployment projects to accelerate the adoption of building decarbonization - energy efficiency, electrification, demand flexibility- in the commercial building sector, for existing buildings retrofits as well as new construction. Areas of focus include technical assistance, technologies and strategies for deep retrofits, financing and implementation approaches. Your responsibilities include development of work plans, project execution coordinating diverse and matrixed staff, liaising with the Department of Energy (DOE) and other sponsors, and industry stakeholder engagement.
What You Will Do:
- Assist in the development or contribute to development of project work plans, scope of work, budgets, staffing.
- Coordinate project execution for moderate size or portions of major programs tasks.
- Conduct technical work, coordinating staff assignments and work, track budgets and spending, internal and external project reporting.
- Coordinate sub-contracts with external consultants.
- Develop technical reports, case studies, and other market-facing technical resources.
- Present at conferences and other industry forums.
- Assist in the creation and development of project ideas on building decarbonization, responsive to DOE and Berkeley Lab priorities, building sector needs and opportunities, in collaboration with principal investigators.
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
- As necessary, interact with industry stakeholders including city/state regulators, building owners, operators, designers, builders, utilities, service providers, manufacturers, ESCOs, and others.
- As necessary, liaise with DOE and other sponsors at the direction of project Principal investigators.
What is Required:
- Minimum 5 years of experience in building energy efficiency.
- Bachelor's degree / advanced degree in architecture/engineering/building science or a related field or equivalent education and professional experience.
- Experience with leading partnerships across diverse stakeholders.
- Strong project management experience.
- Demonstrated abilities to determine program requirements, estimate budget requirements, arrange for subcontracts where necessary, develop organizational and program plans
- Strong knowledge of energy efficiency, electrification, grid-integration and decarbonization of commercial buildings - technologies, design and delivery processes, operations.
- Familiarity with energy efficiency programs, including utility programs.
- Familiarity with the commercial building market.
- Familiarity with energy efficiency financing and cost-benefit analyses.
- Networks and relationships in the building energy efficiency industry.
- Excellent networking and communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Strong time management skills and the ability to prioritize projects and tasks
- Ability to effectively collaborate and successfully work in a team environment and as an individual contributor
- Excellent time management skills, including the ability to prioritize work, and collaborate effectively with clients, project teams, and industry experts.
- Proven ability to work on several concurring projects with multiple leads and provide direction and guidance as a work lead to team, and to supervise the activities of others, as needed.
- Ability to work successfully in an interdisciplinary environment and to collaborate successfully with colleagues and others from a diversity of fields.
Desired Qualifications:
- Masters or Ph.D. in architecture, engineering, building sciences, or a related field.
- Experience with developing and writing applied R&D proposals.
- Expertise in building HVAC systems.
- Knowledge of Building Performance Standards (BPS) and building energy performance benchmarking.

- The full salary range for this position is $119,796 to $146,412. The budgeted salary range that the Lab reasonably expects to pay for this position is $126,437 to $139,747. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, and certifications, and also aligned with the internal peer group.
