Director of Laboratory Building Operations
Job Summary:
Reporting to the Executive Vice Provost and the AVP for Facilities Infrastructure and Sustainability, the Director of Laboratory Building Operations is responsible for directing technical laboratory services, and the oversight of space utilization, management and renovation within all the science departments.
They advise the Executive Vice Provost and the AVP for Facilities Infrastructure and Sustainability on policy issues regarding implementation of systems for the support of research and instruction, as well as policies pertaining to the building's physical plant management, and health and safety issues.
Job Description:
Supports the operation of science research and teaching within the science building, including multi-departmental science space in other buildings on campus that encompasses laboratories, classrooms and office spaces. Meets regularly with representatives of academic departments in the sciences to discuss facilities and infrastructure issues and any other areas of concern on the impact of the physical plant on science research and teaching.
Assists in developing and implementing procedures for meeting requirements of environmental, health and safety and security. Ensures laboratory, classroom, and building compliance with federal, state and city regulations. Responsible for coordinating with the Office of Community Accountability, Response, and Emergency Services (CARES) for building and room access systems.
Sits on the Barnard College Safety Committee. Works on building wide environmental health and safety issues across all the science departments, and coordinates with department-centric personnel.
Supervises vendors and contractors responsible for equipment repairs and minor renovations. Works with relevant academic departments, Purchasing, and Facilities to facilitate and manage vendors and contractors
Responsible for working with the College's Procurement office in sourcing qualified vendors and contractors for equipment repairs and procuring them through the College's purchasing policies and procedures.
Coordinates technical support staff to create a community that supports a well functioning science building that enables teaching and research. Works with AV/IMATS and BCIT for classroom technology.
Responsible for working with Facilities Services to assist in managing the preventative maintenance program for all mechanical equipment under his/her areas of responsibility.
Coordinates with AVP of facilities to establish policies and procedures regarding the modes of operations inclusive of custodial services of all science spaces and the maintenance and inspections of all building infrastructure systems. Coordinates with Facilities Management regarding the schedule and cadence of all routine cleaning of spaces, and maintenance, repairs and work orders of all building mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems.
Coordinates with the Director of Fire Life Safety for all of the life safety systems in all science areas such as fire alarm and sprinkler.
Coordinates with Capital Projects with regard to the planning and execution of any renovation projects for the sciences.
Responsible for space inventory for all science departments and works with the Director of Capital Projects to optimize space utilization within and across departments. Partners with Capital Projects and Facilities Services to assist in identifying long- and short-range physical plant needs as well as alternative recommendations to space problems.
Manages departments' shared facilities, including waste management and emergency response.
Supports the operations of the Vivarium and serves as liaison between the Vivarium and the Department of Comparative Medicine and the institutional Animal Care and Use committee.
Supports and consults faculty committees for space and shared facilities.
Serves as member and a liaison to various College committees as needed.
Provides other related duties as directed by the Office of the Provost.
Salary Range: $105,000 - $115,000
Skills, Qualifications & Requirements:
B.A. or B.S. degree required. Minimum of 5 years management experience of a science research or high-technology environment. Excellent Interpersonal, organization and communication skills required.
Preference for someone with background in multiple sciences fields specifically in chemical or biological and/or advanced degree in laboratory science strongly preferred.
Preference for an engineering background.
Experience with EH&S and/or OHSA standards desirable
