Job Overview
The Electrical Department Foreperson supports the University electrical maintenance team's operations by functioning as a working foreperson in duties that include overseeing and participating in construction, installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical systems and electrical components of HVAC, plumbing and other systems. Duties include but are not limited to:
Interpret blueprints, specifications, details, and instructions, working alongside team members to complete tasks; plan and schedule work based on individual skill levels and project needs; and provide input to the supervisor regarding employee performance and conduct.
Understand and follow industry safety practices while performing daily tasks; and apply good general knowledge of building mechanical/electrical/plumbing system operations and use of industry standard tools and test equipment.
Apply the knowledge and skills required to troubleshoot and repair residential/industrial/commercial level electrical systems and electrical components of HVAC, plumbing and other systems.
Work independently to assess and diagnose system concerns and develop a repair project scope, collaborating as needed with other trades, contractors, vendors, University departments and stakeholders.
Order parts, tools and supplies from various vendors, verify orders on arrival, prepare estimates/cost sheets for projects, and assist with budget planning.
Employ strong leadership skills in planning and managing work, and in training new low voltage shop employees.
Make proficient use of computer programs to generate spreadsheets, read blueprints, and perform other related tasks.
Apply experience with meeting vendors and contractors to scope out work, request proposals, and schedule the work.
Use experience with CMMS programs to tracking work order completion, run reports for aging work orders, and work with the supervisor on planning work order assignments for shop.
Work Interactions
Reporting directly to the Supervisor of the Low Voltage Department, the Electrical Department Foreperson provides is a direct service to the department, ensuring a comfortable, safe and clean environment in which the University community can live, learn and work.
They work primarily mainly with Facilities Management staff members, but as work is performed, they interact with students, faculty, staff and visitors as they traverse the campus. They work cooperatively with fellow employees and building occupants to assure work is completed on time and according to specified plans.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalency
Written proof of completion of an approved four-year electrical apprenticeship program or equivalent training and 8000 hours of work experience in the electrical trade
At least 5 years of experience of continuous electrical shop leadership
Completion of an approved 4-year electrical apprenticeship program
Possession of a valid driver license
Ability to qualify as a university authorized driver
