JOB SCOPE:
Reporting to the Manager of Approvals, the Planner 1 provides and assists the Manager with professional land use planning advice and opinion to Council and the public on all types of planning development applications including building permit applications. This position is a temporary, 12 month contract starting in January, 2023. Hybrid work options may be available.
DUTIES:
Assists the Manager of Approvals in processing all types of planning and development applications including official plan and zoning by-law amendments, site plan applications, minor variances, and land severances
Provides planning information and liaisons with developers, landowners, staff, and general public
Advises the public and various agencies on planning matters within the legislative and regulatory standards set out in applicable Provincial/Municipal Acts
Provides planning advice and assistance to the Municipality on matters relating to the development and use of land and resources including information regarding Official Plan land use designations and zoning classes of landholdings in the Municipality
Provides research support for the preparation of Official Plan or Secondary Plan updates, land use studies, or detailed policy reviews
Supports the Manager in representing the Municipality’s interests at the Ontario Land Tribunal
Updates and maintains the municipal GIS land parcel base maps and data systems that relate to Planning and Building layers
Responds to front counter and telephone inquiries concerning building and plumbing permit information, application fees, Development Charges, servicing requirements and securing approvals from outside agencies
Provides staff support as secretariat on planning professional committees as required
Prepares letters, statistics, staff reports, notices of public meetings, schedules, by-laws, etc. for the review and approval of the Manager
Prepares legal zoning compliance letters
Maintains departmental files
Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
Completion of a post-secondary degree in Urban and Regional Planning or closely related discipline is desired
Minimum of one (1) year relevant work experience. Experience in a municipal environment considered an asset
Full, provisional, or eligible membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners and Ontario Professional Planners Institute is desired
Familiarity and experience with applicable legislation such as the Planning Act, Municipal Act, and Ontario Building Code
Excellent use of the English language in applying interpersonal, communication, report writing, presentation and analytical skills
Proficiency with technology, experience in Microsoft Office, a must
Experience with Geographical Information Systems (GIS) considered an asset
Ability to meet strict deadlines
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Valid Class G Driver’s License
A clean Criminal Records Check is a requirement of employment
