JOB SUMMARY
We are seeking an Assistant Steward at the Landels-Hill Big Creek Ecological Reserve, UC Santa Cruz's 8,000 acre living laboratory and outdoor classroom on the Big Sur coast. This position works closely with a small, on-site team of personnel and will be assigned a variety of tasks that support research, teaching and stewardship activities on the reserve. The workplace is located 50 miles south of Monterey on the remote and sometimes isolated south coast of Big Sur. We are looking for someone who can wear different hats on a day-to-day basis, has experience with rural property maintenance, and is inspired by supporting science and teaching in an educational setting. The majority of the work will be outdoors working on a variety of stewardship and land management efforts; however, office and shop work and driving to purchase supplies will be necessary from time to time. This position requires someone who can work effectively with diverse groups of people in a cohesive, efficient, and productive manner. Strong interpersonal, communication and organization skills are essential. Under supervision of the Reserve Director, overseen and coordinated by the Lead Reserve Steward, this position is an on-the-ground job conducting a variety of core duties in support of facilities operations at Big Creek Reserve, including the maintenance of grounds, trails, roads, tools, facilities and infrastructure. Incumbent will be required to drive a vehicle throughout the reserve on steep, narrow dirt roads. May run errands to the Monterey, Santa Cruz or San Luis Obispo areas, requiring good organization and list-making skills to minimize trips. The rugged living and working conditions require a high level of personal integrity including the ability to sustain professionalism among a small crew of colleagues and a wide range of stakeholders. Of critical importance is a heightened awareness of safety as this is essential when working in a location far from emergency services.
This full-time position has a weekly work schedule that may fluctuate throughout the year; incumbent will be expected to work with the Reserve Stewards to develop specific work schedules that, at times, may include weekends. Work starts at Big Creek Reserve on scheduled work days. Basic overnight accommodations can be provided on-site.

JOB DUTIES
60% - Vegetation and landscape maintenance
- Maintain access on trails and roads by removing vegetation and repairing tread using hand tools (i.e. shovel, Pulaski, McLeod, hoe, hand saw, loppers, etc.), power tools (i.e. chainsaw, string trimmer, hedge cutter, etc.). Reduce fuels to maintain defensible space for fire safety. Perform, as directed, established invasive species management protocols using hand tools, power tools and herbicide-application equipment. Perform special landscape projects, as needed.
20% - Building and infrastructure maintenance
- Monitor and perform basic maintenance and cleaning of photovoltaic battery systems, generators, springs, and water systems. Directly assist with rough carpentry, plumbing and electrical repairs and alterations to buildings and campgrounds. Purchasing, acquiring, loading and unloading materials. Maintain defensible space around facilities for fire safety. Perform custodial duties to maintain readiness of visitor spaces (e.g. cleaning, removing trash, ordering supplies, etc.). Act as a professional point of contact for visitors to facilitate their use of the reserve's facilities.
20% - Tool, equipment and vehicle maintenance
- Perform or provide for the basic maintenance (i.e. scheduled fluids and parts changes) of small engines, tools, equipment, and off-highway vehicles. Monitor and keep vehicles free of rodents, cleaning when necessary. Maintain work records and maintenance logs.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Prior related experience in grounds, farm, building, ranch, natural resource maintenance, or similar fields.
- Mechanical aptitude (e.g. experience with the functioning, use and maintenance of small engines, generators, tools and vehicles, etc.).
- Experience with the safe operation and maintenance of a chainsaw.
- Experience with the safe operation and maintenance of hand and power tools for trail and road work, such as Pulaskis, McLeods, hoes, string trimmers, and hedge cutters.
- Ability to exercise initiative and good judgment, especially with regard to safety.
- Ability to effectively communicate in written form.
- Ability to work accurately, with interruptions, to meet deadlines.
- Ability to effectively communicate verbally.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Familiarity with the scientific and educational mission of the Natural Reserve System or equivalent experience with maintaining client visitor services.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
- Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
- Work days start and end at Landels-Hill Big Creek Reserve, which is located along the Big Sur Coast in Monterey County approximately 5 miles north of Lucia, CA.
- Ability to perform work in a rugged physical environment and inclement weather with simple infrastructure and off-grid utilities conditions.
- General physical flexibility, direct lifting (up to 80 pounds), moving objects of great weight by appropriate means, walking to and working in remote areas with rugged terrain, heavy brush, biting and stinging insects, bears and mountain lions.
- Poison Oak is present. Incumbent must be willing to take the measures required to work in contact with and cut/remove poison oak.
- Occasional work in confined spaces such as crawlspaces, water tanks and trenches while bending, stooping and/or kneeling.
- Variable daily work schedule depending on seasonal weather conditions and status of projects.
