City Tech invites applications for a College Laboratory Technician within the Environmental Control Technology Department, housed in the School of Technology and Design, to ideally begin in spring 2022. The Department of Environmental Control Technology offers an AAS in Environmental Control and a BTech in Facilities Management and educates students in the fields of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) to design, install, repair, and maintain efficient systems critical to the comfort and health of building occupants.The Department provides a learning atmosphere conducive to the needs of the curricula. There are classrooms, laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment, and a computer lab that together allow students to make the important connections between theory, design and practice.
Reporting to the Chair of the Environmental Control Technology Department, the successful candidate will be expected to perform the following tasks:
- Facilitate hands-on learning in the department's laboratories by operating, maintaining, performing general repairs, and setting up laboratory equipment related to heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment.
- Recover, evacuate and charge refrigeration systems used in laboratory equipment according to EPA 608 regulations, in support of coursework.
- Operate fuel supplies to laboratory fuel burning equipment, whether gas or oil, in support of coursework.
- Operate all hydronic lab equipment including, but not limited to chillers, pumps and cooling tower, in support of coursework.
- Demonstrate installation of piping and control wiring inside the laboratories.
- Move laboratory equipment using hand trucks, dollies, etc.May be required to manually lift laboratory materials and equipment up to 50 lbs.
- Receive deliveries of supplies and equipment related to laboratory needs, and store them properly.
- Perform minor carpentry work to facilitate laboratory instrumentation such as instrument and control panels.
- Maintain and replace, when needed, controls and instrumentation related to HVAC & R lab equipment
- Support faculty by demonstrating lab pipe cutting, threading and fitting as well as soldering and/ or brazing copper tubing.
- Prepare purchase requisitions in the CUNYfirst procurement system
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma with a minimum of four years' related experience. Additional education may be used to meet the experience requirement: an Associate degree may be substituted for two years experience, and a Bachelor's degree may be substituted for four years experience.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred Qualifications:
- Four (4) or more years of demonstrated technical or professional experience is preferred.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to use computer applications such as a web browser, MS Word, and email
- Good organizational skills.
- EPA 608 Universal Certificate or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hiring.
- Strength in collaborating within a team of faculty and staff up to and including the executive leadership level.
